The social determinants of health

The social determinates of health include factors other than access to health care, such as socioeconomic status, economic stability, access to quality education, physical environment, support networks, employment, etc. Although efforts to improve healthcare within the United States usually point to responsibilities within the healthcare system, there is a growing recognition that these social determinants of health are also critical—from the individual to the population level.

As a DNP-prepared nurse, you will consider and address the social determinants of health when working with patients. Think about the ways in which this will positively impact your patients’ experiences and outcomes, as well as the communities you serve.

Previous

To prepare:

· Review the Learning Resources that address the importance and value of taking the SDoH into consideration as a DNP-prepared nurse.

· Consider why and how you intend to begin shifting your thinking and practice related to the SDoH from the relatively smaller scope of patient care to the broader perspective of organizations, communities, and the larger field of nursing (e.g., advocating at the policy level, meeting with stakeholders, utilizing esearch and data, etc.).

· Select one SDoH Domain that is of particular interest to you on which to focus for this Discussion.

· Using Walden Library and the internet, search for and identify three scholarly, peer-reviewed articles (within the last 5 years) that address the SDoH Domain you selected from the broader perspective of organizations, communities, and the larger field of nursing.

By Day 3 of Week 6

Post the following:

· An explanation of the importance and value of taking the SDoH into consideration as a DNP-prepared nurse.

· Identify the one SDoH Domain you selected and explain why it is particularly important to you.

· An explanation of why and how you intend to shift your thinking and practice related to the SDoH from the patient-level to the organizational, community, and/or larger field of nursing levels. Be specific, provide examples, and cite the three scholarly resources you identified to support your points.

Note: Your posts should be substantial (1000 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful post but cannot stand alone as the entire post.

RESPOND TO THIS DISCUSSION POST.

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that significantly influence health outcomes in communities (Social Determinants of Health, 2023). These factors, such as socio-economic conditions, birthplace, work environment, residence, religious beliefs, age, race, and ethnicity (SDOH, 2023), are not just statistics but real-life circumstances that shape individuals’ health. SDOH is also profoundly affected by policies that influence development, healthcare, social networks, and other community agencies vital for healthy living.

Recognizing SDOH

Being in tune with one’s community is a step in recognizing the social determinants that affect that community. As a prospective Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) professional, knowing what affects your community is the first step in being a change agent to address the issue.

One of the most pressing SDOH issues is access to quality education in minority communities. Education, far from being just a means of personal advancement, it is a transformative force that can break the cycle of poverty and improve health literacy (SDOH, 2023). It is crucial that every community, regardless of its socio-economic status, has access to quality formal and informal education, offering hope for a healthier future.

Unfortunately, not everyone has what the National Conference for Community and Justice defines as a privilege. Privilege is the unearned access to resources that enhance one’s chances of meeting needs or having a better quality of life (National Conference for Community and Justice, 2021). These privileges, whether earned or unearned, can significantly improve a person’s quality of life and health, making it easier to live a healthier and longer life (Davis, 2022). However, these privileges are often foreign concepts to many in most minority communities, leading to significant disparities in educational outcomes.

DNP Nurse roles

A DNP-prepared nurse has a significant role in addressing the root causes of social determinants. Their expertise and ethical obligation empower them to dismantle systems that encourage inequity, creating privilege for some while others are not given that same level of support (Davis, 2022). This role is not just important, it’s empowering, and it is a call to action for all DNP professionals.

As a prospective DNP nurse who plans to practice in the clinical setting, I believe it is imperative to engage in or initiate strategies that address the root cause of education inequities. This could involve working with local schools, community organizations, and government agencies to develop and implement programs that promote equal access to quality education. I plan to work with these stakeholders to level the playing field so that every community can access quality education.

Conclusion

Whether practicing in clinical settings or not, DNP professionals should engage stakeholders to address educational inequities and advocate for initiatives that equalize access to quality education across all communities. This is not just a suggestion, it is a commitment, and the determination to ensure that no one receives greater punishment or substandard education because of the color of their skin. This is a call to action for all DNP-prepared partitioners to foster more inclusive policies to support underserved populations.
