Chapter 10

https://archive.org/details/looking-out-looking-in-16th-edition/page/323/mode/2up

You and your partner should work together to produce a one-page, one-sided (single-spaced) outline/handout for the class in relation to the items below. (Stay within the page & formatting limits.) Post your one-page outline/handout to the Discussion Board on Cvs prior to that class. You will then deliver a 10-15 minute presentation (monologue) on this material. During your presentation, you should have a conversation with us, not read word-for-word from your handout.
For your one-page handout, place a proper heading in the top left-hand corner of the page (single- spaced): student names, date, chapter title, COMM 220/Dr. Impellizzeri. Then, follow the format I provide below to create your one-page handout. I also provide an example of theme identification for ch2 (don’t forget to ‘explain’ as well) along with time suggestions per section.

Themes: Identify and Explain 3 main themes or major ideas/concepts in the reading. (Do NOT attempt to outline and summarize the whole chapter. That’s not the point of this assignment!!!
Select 3 themes you notice in the chapter.) Note: Each partner should have at least one theme on
which to present. See the example themes I provide for ch2. {5-8 min.}

 Theme 1: Rich and Lean channels of communication (36-37)
Theme 2: Three Consequences of Mediated Comm: disinhibition, hyperpersonal comm,
impression management (38-41)
Theme 3: Two Drawbacks of Mediated Comm: loneliness and deception (47-48, 50)

Application: What do you believe may be the most helpful insight that you/we should apply to
your/our own IPC practice and Prime Relationships? In other words, how does this insight better
equip us with Practical IPC Wisdom? {2-3 min.}

Group Dialogue Presentations (GDPs)

COMM 220: IPC | Dr. Impellizzeri

Instructions

You and a partner(s) will present on one of the chapters from Looking Out, Looking In ( LOLI) or from, in a couple of cases, another key reading in the course. These presentations will function to get our class discussion going for the day. You and your partner(s) should work together to produce a one-page, one-sided (single-spaced) outline/ handout for the class in relation to the items below. ( Stay within the page & formatting limits.) Post your one-page outline/handout to the Discussion Board on Cvs prior to that class. You will then deliver a 10-15 minute presentation (monologue) on this material. ( Stay within this time limit.) Then, there will be time for class discussion to follow. During your presentation, you should have a conversation with us, not read word-for-word from your handout .

For your one-page handout, place a proper heading in the top left-hand corner of the page (single-spaced): student names, date, chapter title, COMM 220/Dr. Impellizzeri. Then, follow the format I provide below to create your one-page handout. I also provide an example of theme identification for ch2 ( don’t forget to ‘explain’ as well) along with time suggestions per section.

Central Idea : In 2-3 content-filled sentences, what is the central idea or thesis of the chapter?

Themes : Identify  and Explain 3 main themes or major ideas/concepts in the reading. (Do NOT attempt to outline and summarize the whole chapter. That’s not the point of this assignment!!! Select 3 themes you notice in the chapter.) Note: Each partner should have at least one theme on which to present. See the example themes I provide for ch2. {5-8 min.}

Experience : From your own experience or the lived experience of another person, discuss a real-life example that illustrates one of your above themes in IPC practice. Identify the applied context (family, friendship, workplace, church, civic life, culture) in your discussion. ( Use wise discretion with the details you decide to share from your own or another's life.) {2-3 min.}

Note:

If one partner presents the “Experience,” another partner should present the “Application.”

Application : What do you believe may be the most helpful insight that you/we should apply to your/our own IPC practice and Prime Relationships? In other words, how does this insight better equip us with Practical IPC Wisdom? {2-3 min.}

Discussion Questions : At the end of your presentation, propose 2 thought-provoking questions for the class to discuss. These questions can be: conceptual, integrative of other class readings/lectures (e.g. Lewis), or application oriented. You get to choose, but they should be drawn from or linked to the material you presented. ( Draw these questions from your themes, experiences, or applications. This is not the time to introduce entirely new content from the chapter.) {1 min.}

(see submission instructions on next page)

Submission Instructions :

Please upload your one-page GDP Outline/Handout to the Cvs Discussion Forum by 11:00am on the morning of your presentation. This will allow your classmates time to print the handout prior to class, if they so desire. Create a thread/reply/post that includes: (a) your chapter number and title, and (b) all presenters’ first & last names. Print paper copies of the handout for yourselves (as the presenters) and one for Dr. Impellizzeri as your official in-class submission and for grading purposes during your presentation. During the presentation, we will project your handout onto the screen from the Cvs discussion forum.
