Each of the instructions below should be completed using the file “Module 6 FuelData Template.xlsx”. Remember, you should NEVER hard-code the values into a cell and/or formula. In other words, you MUST use only cell references and formulas to complete all instructions and calculate your results; directly entering values into cells or formulas will result in ZERO credit for the step.

Step 1: Download the attached file “Module 6 FuelData Template.xlsx” and open the file in Microsoft Excel. If necessary, navigate to the “Data” Worksheet (the regular one, not “Data with Premium Fuel Dummy”).

Step 2: Insert a new column into the table between Displacement and Fuel Type, then calculate the square of the Displacement in the new column you created. Give your new column an appropriate title.

Step 3: Use the Data Analysis package to run a Regression where you use Displacement and Displacement_Squared to predict Hwy MPG, making sure that you check Residual Plots under Output Options.

Step 4: Title the resulting output worksheet “Quadratic Output” without the quotes.

Step 5: Consider the Residual Plots generated by the Regression report; do either of the plots indicate a cause for concern that the necessary conditions for valid inference may not be met? Select your response by choosing from the drop-down menus in cells K3:K4 on the Data worksheet.

Step 6: Based on your regression output, should we include the Displacement_Squared variable in our final model? Select “Yes” or “No” in cell K6 to indicate your response.

Step 7: Proceed to the Data with Premium Fuel Dummy worksheet and run a regression using Displacement, ClassMidsize, ClassLarge, and FuelPremium to predict Hwy MPG.

Step 8: Rename the output worksheet Dummy Variable Output.

Step 9: Consider the Displacement Residual Plot and FuelPremium Residual Plot (for the purposes of this assignment, ignore the ClassMidsize and ClassLarge Plots since they are dummy variables and thus require special handling) generated by the Regression report; do either of the plots indicate a cause for concern that the necessary conditions for valid inference may not be met? Select your response by choosing from the drop-down menus in cells K3:K4 on the Data with Premium Fuel Dummy worksheet.

Step 10: Based on your regression output, indicate which variables should be included in your final model by selecting from the drop-down menus in cells K7:K10 of the Data with Premium Fuel Dummy worksheet.

Step 11: Which of the three dummy variables (ClassMidsize, ClassLarge, and FuelPremium) have the biggest impact on the Hwy MPG? Note that I did not ask which is the most significant, but rather which has the most meaningful influence on the output variable. Select your response in cell K12.

Step 12: ClassMidsize and ClassLarge are both binary values, so they can each be 0 or 1, but they cannot both be 1 at the same time. This suggests that there are three possibilities for cars as it relates to these two variables: (0,0), (1,0), and (0,1). Interpret each of these three scenarios in your own words in the merged cells K14:N18.

Once you have completed all the steps, save your work and submit the completed document to this Assignment folder. Also, you may wish to review the attached rubric to guide you in completing the assignment.
