Part 1 – Design philosophy
choose a practicing Interior Designer working today to identify their personal design philosophy. This will require literature review and research to uncover their personal philosophy on design.
collect multiple examples and images of their work. Study the projects, searching for common threads in expression of form, design applications, aesthetics, etc. See if you can identify how the designer has expressed their philosophy in their projects.
collect reviews of the work from either the designer themselves in the form of an article or from colleagues and critics.
Share your findings about the designers, their philosophies, and their work with the group. Identify your personal philosophy on the designer’s work.
- Document collected work in a presentation formatted to 17″ x 11″ (include all work samples, images and reviews along with your philosophy on the designer and their work. Please add student names and date to the final document.

- Part 2 – Personal Philosophy
Using the same process outlined above, identify your own design philosophy. find a place with no distractions in order to discover these things about yourself as a designer.
personal bias: refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and opinions that an individual holds that may unconsciously influence their judgment and decision-making. These biases can be based on a variety of factors, such as personal experiences, cultural background, and societal influences.
Start by jotting down all of the things that you feel are important to you as a designer.
collect all of the work you have done prior to this course, what have been some of your critiques (this can be from juried reviews, instructor feedback, etc.) and accomplishments. Have you submitted any competition work?
What are your objectives as a designer? What are your goals, where do you want to end up?
How will you accomplish these goals?
How do you measure success as a designer?
